A Cyber Attack Results in a Human Death

WatchGuard hopes it is wrong in this prediction. But with more computing devices embedded in cars, phones, TVs and even medical devices, digitally dealt death is not only possible, it's plausible. Security is still often an afterthought when developing innovative technical systems. Criminals, hacktivists, and even nation-states are launching increasingly targeted cyber-attacks and most recently, a researcher even showed how to wirelessly deliver an 830 volt shock to an insecure pacemaker.

National Council on Fireworks Safety offers common sense tips for staying safe during New Year celebrations

WASHINGTON: Using consumer fireworks on New Years is a tradition. And it can be safe if a few common sense rules are followed, says Ralph Apel, the spokesperson for the National Council on Fireworks Safety. Consumer fireworks go through vigorous third party testing in China before being shipped to the United States. But he notes, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC"), there were an estimated 9,600 fireworks related injuries during the Fourth of July season in 2011. Most of these injuries would not have occurred if the fireworks had been used under close adult supervision and if some basic safety steps had been taken. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these common sense safety tips for using consumer fireworks in hopes that injuries to consumers can be greatly reduced this season:

Brainloop supports major licensing deal for Nanobiotix with its Secure Dataroom

Munich, Germany: Brainloop has announced that French Nanobiotix S.A., a leader in the development of cancer treatments based on nanotherapeutics, has used Brainloop’s Secure Dataroom to negotiate an exclusive licensing and collaboration agreement with PharmaEngine, Inc. (Taipei, Taiwan). PharmaEngine, Inc., a specialty pharma company focused on the development of in-licensed oncology drugs, received exclusive rights to develop and commercialize Nanobiotix’ lead product NBTXR3 in the Asian-Pacific region, a transaction that was announced in August 2012. The goal of the cooperation is to accelerate NBTXR3 clinical program development and to develop the Asian market.

Defence Reform Annual Report

The Defence Secretary Philip Hammond recently welcomed Lord Levene’s first annual review of progress against the recommendations of the Defence Reform Review.

In a letter to the Secretary of State, Lord Levene congratulated the Ministry of Defence on strong progress made against the 53 recommendations since the publication of the Defence Reform Report and said that he believes the programme is being run with genuine urgency.
