Cardiff man prosecuted for working illegally

On Wednesday 27 September 2023, a Cardiff man was prosecuted at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court for working as illegal security.

Aymen Essa from Cardiff was fined £100 by Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court, and he was ordered to pay £846 prosecution costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

The prosecution was brought by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) who was informed by South Wales Police that Mr Essa was working illegally without an SIA licence at a Rhondda construction site within an industrial estate on 09 January 2023.

Downing Street ponders creating ‘AI Safety Institute’

London: Downing Street officials have been touring the world working to agree on a warning statement as a draft agenda points towards the possibility of international cooperation on cutting-edge AI to address the looming threat to human life, as the AI Safety Summit approaches.

The draft refers to establishing an “AI Safety Institute” which would be designed to enable the national security-relate scrutiny of frontier AI models, allowing global leaders to come together and collaborate, likely to be discusses on the final day of the summit.

UK Carrier Strike Group shows strength in combat mission training

HMS Queen Elizabeth and her embarked jets and helicopters have proven their ability to provide the “punch” of the UK Carrier Strike Group during a series of simulated strike missions alongside international partners.

The UK flagship has completed the first phase of her autumn deployment with simulated missions in the North Sea and Norwegian Sea.

The aircraft carrier was joined by Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond; Royal Fleet Auxiliary tanker RFA Tideforce; Norwegian ships HNoMS Otto Sverdrup and HNoMS Maud; Dutch ships HNLMS De Zeven Provincien and HNLMS Van Amstel; and Belgian frigate BNS Louise Marie for the combat-style training in northern Europe.

UK government announces £8m AI scholarship funding

London: The UK government has announced £8m funding to create 800 new AI scholarships as part of a new £60 million Regional Innovation Fund (RIF).

The fund, launched by Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan will boost support for universities in areas with lower levels of research and development as part of a wider initiative to spread AI skills across the UK.

The RIF – relative to the size of each UK nation – will see £48.8 million go towards 110 universities across England and will be delivered by Research England.

A further £5.8 million for Scotland, £3.4 million for Wales and £2 million for Northern Ireland will be allocated to devolved administrations to support local and regional economies, in turn boosting growth and increasing productivity.
