First time SEC579: Virtualization and Private Cloud Security to be taught in the region
SANS Gulf Region 2012, one of the region’s largest infosec training events will be held at the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah from October 13th to 25th with a roster of courses covering virtualisation, cloud security, hacker techniques and Incident Handling.
Dubai will debut a new course to the region in Security 579: Virtualization and Private Cloud Security. According to a recent study by Intel and Dell, among small businesses only 2% of companies have moved all of their applications to a cloud-based infrastructure while 85% have concerns about doing so. Security (28%) and privacy (20%) were the most commonly reported primary concerns.
“The concerns are real and it stems from a fundamental issue - your IT is in somebody else’s environment and many people find that idea scary,” explains Dave Shackleford, a highly experienced security expert, author and teacher of the SEC579 course, “You don’t have clear visibility over what level of security and control is in place which makes assessing and managing risk much more complex.” The six day course covers many areas including architecture and security design, Identity and Access Management as well as extensive use of penetration testing tools and techniques within cloud and virtualised environments.
SANS Gulf 2012 will also host SANS Security 504: Hacker Techniques, Exploits & Incident Handling. Taught by Steve Armstrong, a highly experienced SANS Certified Instructor and expert practitioner who has dealt with high profile incidents across the world; the six day course is aimed at helping information security professionals understand attackers' tactics and design a comprehensive incident handling plan. This plan includes the legal issues associated with responding to computer attacks, including employee monitoring, working with law enforcement, and handling evidence.
The event is rounded off by the popular SEC401: Security Essentials Bootcamp Style, a course endorsed by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) NSTISSI 4013 Standard for Systems Administrators in Information Systems Security (INFOSEC).
Organisers have made a “last call” for attendees to register for SANS Gulf Region 2012, “The event is a welcome return to Dubai and last year proved both an incredible learning experience and a great opportunity to network,” explains Gareth Dance, GSEC Conference Director for EMEA at the SANS Institute, “We still have a few places left on all of the courses but the event is filling up rapidly so I would recommend anybody that is interested in attending should act fast.”
