Terrorism is an increasing concern in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and its border with Somalia. Only two weeks ago, militants from Al Shabaab killed 36 non-Muslim quarry workers near the north Kenyan town of Mandera. The militants said they carried out the attack in response to the involvement of Kenyan forces in the neighbouring country. It was the second massacre which happened recently. Last month militants killed 28 passengers in an attack on a bus in Kenya who could not recite the Muslim statement of faith known as the Shahada. Al Shabaab stated that attacks will continue in Kenya in reprisal for the country’s involvement in an UN-backed peacekeeping force in Somalia.
