Revealed: Secret PIIs in your Unstructured Data!

Personally identifiable information or PII is pretty intuitive. If you know someone’s phone, social security number, or credit card number, you have a direct link to their identity. Hackers use these identifiers, along with a few more personal details, as keys to unlock data, steal identities, and ultimately take your money. The lines between PII and non-PII data are blurring. It’s been known for at least 10 years that there are specific pieces of data, which may appear anonymous, but when they’re taken together are just as effective at identifying a person as traditional PII.

The attack next time...better watch out, your business is at risk!

Cyber attacks are a global problem and malicious attacks such as what we have seen this week in South Korea are by no means uncommon (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-21873017). All businesses are at risk. Taking a relaxed ‘wait and see’ approach to such attacks is daft.

A theory on the South Korean attacks

There has been a lot of report around the South Korean attacks on financial institutes and the media industry. Below is a comment from Jaime Blasco, Labs Director, AlienVault on how the wiper malware works and how they may have got access to the affected networks.

During the day I’ve been thinking about what have just happened in South Korea. Earlier today we published a quick blog post about how the wiper payload works (http://labs.alienvault.com/labs/index.php/2013/information-about-the-south-korean-banks-and-media-systems-attacks/). It is a very simple piece of code that overwrites the MBR (Master Boot Record) making the affected system unable to start after reboot.
