"The internet does not hold the ultimate truth about everything...so use your head and trust your judgement more," experts warn

Making people less trusting of the internet has to be one of the first steps towards combatting cybercrime, it has been warned.

According to business security consultant Roger Smith, internet users must undergo a fundamental change in their perception in order to improve cyber security.

Smith, a security trainer whose company, R & I ICT Consulting Services is based in Canberra, Australia, is one of the contributors to Security 3.0, a book exploring the future of the global security industry. In his chapter, Cyber security: everyone’s responsibility, Smith says:

Steel manufacturing group switches to tokenless two-factor authentication

Tata Steel Europe is Europe’s second largest steel manufacturer. Until now, home office staff, salespeople and IT staff on the road have used a token-based two-factor authentication method to gain remote access to internal company data and services. However, this method was costly: the hardware tokens had to be replaced every three years, which created a great deal of work in terms of registration, shipping and administration. Tata Steel Europe decided to switch to the tokenless two-factor authentication method SecurAccess. Currently, 6,500 employees receive their passcode via realtime and pre-loaded SMS or e-mail.
