New cabling regulation to affect manufacturers, distributors and installers

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) is advising its members of a change to the regulations for cables sold in the European Union. As of 1st July 2017, only cable compliant with European standard EN 50575:2014 can be sold for use in installed fire and security systems. This follows a 12 month transition period, after the standard for power, control and communication cables was added to the list of standards called up by the Construction Products Regulation (CPR) on 1st July 2016.

IoT Security Expert: "FDA needs tech industry's advice" (Abbott's St. Jude's pacemakers)

The media recently reported that the FDA had issued a stern warning to Abbott for failing to properly investigate and resolve cybersecurity risks and battery malfunctions for its pacemaker and defibrillator devices:

In response, IoT cybersecurity expert Rod Schultz, VP of Product, Rubicon Labs, says: "The FDA warning to Abbott is an echo of challenges we’ve seen in other technology verticals that are built with batteries and software. Every mobile device in the field today is available and affordable because of advances in those two areas. The healthcare industry must build on technology advancement to innovate, but patient safety and FDA requirements have got to be addressed as top-most priorities. The FDA works closely with federal agencies, DHS, and medical device manufacturers to increase reliability and security, but it seems that more guidance is needed, and perhaps the incentive structure needs to be changed.

ECA launches CSR survey with Considerate Constructors Scheme

A major new survey on corporate social responsibility (CSR) is now open to electrotechnical businesses, after being launched by the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA). The survey is being supported by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) – the national scheme to improve the image of the construction industry.

Twitter accounts of ABC News and Good Morning America were targeted by hackers recently

Tweets filled with profanity and false news reports were posted to the ABC News account, while tweets claiming to be from “Russian hackers” who “love” President Donald Trump were appearing on Good Morning America’s page.

Commenting on this, Robert Capps, VP of business development at NuData Security, said "If Twitter were a country, it would be the 12th largest in the world with over 100 million users logging in daily, and continually growing. The size of its membership, and its capacity as a live media source of information, make it an attractive and vulnerable target for account takeovers. By hijacking accounts, bad actors have access the audiences of celebrities, brands and news outlets with thousands of followers, and can also leverage hashtags and lists to push that reach further. It’s a reminder for everyone to use unique strong passwords on every site, and consider using a password manager like 1Password or LastPass for easy generation of strong, unique passwords, as well as storage and encryption of these passwords."
