Vigilance can report that two brothers from West Yorkshire have been prosecuted for working in the security industry without the proper licences.

Shamir Razak, an unlicensed door supervisor, and Abdul Rehman, his brother and employer, both pleaded guilty at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on 23 September.  The prosecution was brought by the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

Rehman was fined £290, whilst Razak was given 250 hours unpaid community service.  The brothers each have to pay costs of £1125, to be paid within 56 days.

The U.S. Senate has approved new legislation aimed at helping government agencies and private-sector companies combat ransomware attacks. The legislation comes as local governments and schools continue to be hit by sophisticated – and in some cases coordinated – ransomware attacks. The proposed law, the “DHS Cyber Hunt and Incident Response Teams Act,” authorizes the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to invest in and develop “incident response teams” to help organizations battle ransomware attacks.  Part of that means that the DHS would create teams to protect state and local entities from cyber threats and restore infrastructure that has been affected by ransomware attacks. Below are comments on the move from experts with KnowBe4 and STEALTHbits Technologies.

The SIA yesterday (30 September) announced the appointment of Michelle Russell as the SIA Director of Partnership and Interventions.

Michelle will be joining the SIA from the Charity Commission where she is currently Director of Investigations, Monitoring and Enforcement.
