Middlesbrough, UK: PoliceBox, the mobile working platform that enables frontline officers to complete their tasks from within one, intuitive app, has introduced a new capability which will improve data quality by eliminating the need for officers to manually enter important data types such as driving licence details into their mobile device. With its new AI-powered OCR (Optical Character Recognition) functionality, officers can now scan and import data from state-issued documents to instigate a database search within a few seconds, typically saving two minutes of officer time while helping to keep officers safe since they can maintain focus on the individual in front of them instead of looking down at their device.

SIA launches consultation on a code of conduct for private security operatives

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has launched a six-week consultation on a draft code of conduct for SIA licence holders and applicants for SIA licences. The SIA is inviting the industry, licence holders, and anyone with an interest in private security, to have its say on the draft code of conduct by taking part in a survey, which is available here. The consultation will end on 23 February 2020.

Firms warned over rise of 'ransome gang' after Travelex attack

The cyber attack on foreign exchange provider Travelex demonstrates the growing threat of ransomware and is a warning that businesses need to step up their security, according to a leading cyber expert.

Tim Thurlings of bluedog Security Monitoring says the company has detected a worrying increase in the number of ransomware attacks worldwide in recent months. He blames a combination of factors including the ready availability of ransomware on the darknet and the uptake of cyber insurance which effectively allows companies to cover the cost of ransom payments.
