1 in 8 children say time online harms their school work

Nearly one in eight children in the UK say their online life harms their school work according to a survey by The Children’s Society.

The survey is among the evidence considered in the national charity’s new report, Net Gains? Young People’s Digital Lives and Well-Being. 

It found 13% of young people aged 10-17 said their life online had a ‘mostly negative’ impact on their school work, including homework, while 37% said it had a ‘mixed impact’ with both positive and negatives. In contrast, 35% reported a ‘mostly positive’ impact, while 16% said there was ‘no impact’.

Decrypting Qakbot’s Encrypted Registry Keys

Since the return of the Qakbot Trojan in early September 2021, especially through SquirrelWaffle malicious spam campaigns, we’ve received a few Qakbot samples to analyze from our Trustwave DFIR and Global Threats Operations teams.

Qakbot is a banking Trojan that has been around since 2007. It has been continually developed, with new capabilities introduced such as lateral movement, the ability to exfiltrate email and browser data, and to install additional malware. One new skill is to insert encrypted data into the registry. One of the requests we received from Trustwave’s DFIR and Global Threats Operations teams is for us to decrypt the registry data that Qakbot created. We duly jumped into this task, and, as it was a bit of fun, decided to blog about it.

CSS Assure appoints information security specialist as part of growth plans

Global cyber security firm CSS Assure has appointed Doug Lucktaylor as head of information security.

The newly-created role will see Doug – who has more than 20 years’ experience in the IT and security space – lead and build CSS Assure’s cyber security and data protection team, as well as work closely with the directors to develop the company’s business strategy.
