FBI releases hate crime statistics...warns online buyers to be wary of scam

Last week, the FBI released the 2009 statistics which indicated that 6,604 criminal incidents involving 7,789 offenses were reported as a result of bias toward a particular race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity/national origin, or physical or mental disability. Hate Crime Statistics, 2009, published by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, includes data from hate crime reports submitted by law enforcement agencies throughout the nation.

Training your staff in security might not solve the negligent insider threat

Despite the fact that since April 2010 a deliberate or malicious data breach can be punished with a fine of up to £500,000, organisations continue to leave themselves vulnerable to attack. A few weeks ago a doctor at North West London Hospitals NHS Trust was found to be in breach of the Data Protection Act for leaving medical information about 56 patients on the London Underground.

Survey finds most employees will steal company data

An Imperva survey of more than 1000 UK residents indicates that insider threats are mainly comprised of normal, mainstream employees. Most strikingly, the survey found that 70% of respondents had clear plans to take something with them upon actually leaving their job. The most popular data is intellectual property (27%) and customer records (17%). Moreover, about half of respondents claimed to have personal ownership of the data - 59% in the case that they were about to change jobs, and 53% if they knew they were about to be dismissed.
