Comment from Corero in response to the Mumsnet attack
Dave Larson, CTO at Corero Network Security, comments: “We are starting to see an increase as DDoS being used, not as the acronym describes (denial of service) but as a distraction tool for attackers to further profile network security infrastructure, exploit known or zero-day application vulnerabilities to implant forms of malware and engage in data breach activity.
With the increasingly sophisticated and widely available DDoS attack toolkits, cybercriminals are enabled more than ever before to take advantage of DDoS as a distraction techniques to achieve their goals. By executing DDoS attacks that do not fully saturate the Internet link, attackers are able to fly under the radar, evade or degrade any existing firewall defenses gain access to credentials or sensitive information while security teams are tasked with dealing with the initial distraction of attack traffic slowing down the network.”
