A few weeks ago, we were on a conference call with one of the premier analysts in this industry when the subject of private keys came up. We’ve always taken for granted that everyone in the industry understood that as part of certificate management we also manage the private keys associated with those certificates.  This analyst made it clear to us that we couldn’t make this assumption. Two reasons: 1) very few realize that managing certificates also requires the management of private keys, and 2) not many understand how critical the security of private keys is in protecting sensitive data.

Noa Bar-Yosef, Imperva’s Senior Security Strategist provides insight into how the Zeus scam, which has resulted in over 70 arrests, may have operated, while Mickey Boodaei, Trusteer's CEO thinks more Zeus gangs operate globally.

The ZeuS malware is coming of age and the infections are going to get a lot worse says Trusteer, the secure browsing services specialist.  ZeuS malware has already been pushed extensively to users of Web 2.0 and/or social networking sites plus services such as Facebook, Twitter and, most recently, to users of the business social networking site, LinkedIn. Malware is also being modified by cybercriminals using coding toolkits to attack smartphone users. Recent postings by our IT security colleagues at S21sec about ZeuS targeting smartphone users are just the tip of the iceberg when considering the potential of these attacks.

Enter: Amichai Shulman, CTO of Imperva:

“This is the latest in a series of attacks against ACS: law. It started last a couple of weeks ago with a Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attack against them, as well as a site defacement. And now their email database has been published online. In general we've seen cases where the victim was a DDoS target, only to later find that the attackers were really using the DDoS as a diversion to help with the real goal – data theft.  However, I don't think this was the case here. Hackers had one point in mind - to cripple the services of the law firm, to disrupt business services and cause humiliation.
