In response to the news that Lizard Squad are now threatening Malaysia Airlines with a data dump, following an attack on the company’s website, Kevin Epstein, VP of Advanced Security and Governance at Proofpoint, says:
“While a website defacement doesn’t innately point to compromised customer data, this attack is illustrative of the type of brand damage possible from Social Media hacks, website hacks, or other ‘defacement’ attacks. Any compromise that raises any questions of corporate security is detrimental to an organization’s brand equity, particularly consumer-facing brands – and if the defacement indicates attackers have access to security credentials, deeper breaches involving customer data are certainly possible”
