Indeed, one way of improving the integrity and value of the generally perceived low image of the security industry here in Nigeria, is by ensuring effective management policies for security service providers, which are the contractors of security services.
Generally speaking,if big companies deem it fit to enforce other policies concerning their direct staff welfare, operational procedures, financial policies etc, then why neglect their contract staff, especially security which is a part and parcel of their daily operations?
Usually the security staff are relegated, abandoned and left at the mercy of their contractors, many of whom do not have any experience of personnel management and if they do,have refused to abide by the terms and ethics of the contract they signed with the company because of profiteering.
All these inconsistencies are usually overlooked by these companies or treated with kids gloves. These boil down to one thing- the companies which hired these security service providers will be at the receiving end and will bear the risks at last.
When these security contractors are unchecked and not properly managed, they continue to make easy profit off their client at little or no cost or risk on their own part! This is one major reason why people rush in to operate security companies.
But this is not the way these security contractors should behave and conduct their business. They continue to do so because they are not checked, which is a shortcoming on the path of their employers' management policy.
No matter the "strings" attached to these contracts, these security contractors, who are mostly guarding companies, must be closely monitored and supervised to ensure adherence and compliance to the terms and conditions of their contract. This would make them to sit up and avoid exploitation of their staff, which is so rampant today, and which is the major reason why the security industry has a poor image in the Nigerian corporate system(world).
Some companies have begun to tackle this issue, by paying the security providers their service charge, while they directly pay the salaries of the operatives or apart from salaries other bonus incentives are provided directly to the operatives. In some cases they stipulate the salaries they wish the operatives should have thereby leaving the security service providers no choice but to accept the contract condition if they wish to secure it.
Through this way, the clients of these security contractors can raise the standard of the industry here in Nigeria, to the level at which it has a say as in the corporate world of the advanced countries of Europe and America.
