Free webcast series offers practical steps towards protecting against cyber attack

"A network firewall is only the starting point not the end point for network security. There are many additional steps an SME (Small Medium Enterprise) can take to secure their network," says Jim Herbeck, an instructor for the SANS Institute and presenter of an ongoing monthly webcast series helping SME’s better protect themselves from information security threats.

The March webcast focuses on helping SMEs manage network-related risks. Because many network security products and services are targeted for large, multi-national organisations, they may not scale to the budgetary or staffing constraints at SMEs. “To make good network security purchasing decisions, SME managers need to be informed consumers,” says Herbeck.

Security standards such as ISO 27001 and the SANS 20 Critical Security Controls do an excellent job of describing network risk and defining controls that can be implemented to prevent network-based attacks. Unfortunately, the standards are difficult to use by anyone who’s not already an information security specialist. As part of his on-going research at the Business Information Security Competency Center at the Geneva School of Business Administration, Herbeck has worked at simplifying the relevant parts of these information security standards for business use. The webcast leverages these well-known industry standards to provide concrete advice for managing network-related risk.
