One of the most common methods used to attack routers is known as request forgery. For this attack to work the attacker needs to know (or guess) the Internet address your computer uses to communicate with the router. Many routers are configured to use the same address so it’s easy for attackers to find and attack them. To protect themselves, users should change this address from its default setting. (see details for your router
Leaving yourself logged into any web site increases the chances that an attacker can “trick” your computer into sending requests to that web site. In these case of a router, these requests can change basic settings that can be used to manipulate your Internet connection. Using the ‘logout’ button greatly reduces the possibility that this type of attack will be successful. Once you have made the changes to secure your router make sure you logout of the console (see details for your router)
Many tools exist that allow unauthorized persons to hack into a wireless network which does not use a strong password. This can allow an intruder to attack your router or simply use your Internet connection to commit crimes. To protect themselves, users specifically use WPA2-PSK with AES encryption and disable WPS because it has many well-known security flaws. So you need to change the password to your WiFi to a strong one such as a sentence from your favorite book plus some numbers and a special character e.g. TheHillsAreAliveWithTheSoundOfMusic76! (do not use this example of course), you should also turn off the WPS function (see details for your router)
The router’s administrative password is designed to keep unauthorized users from changing router settings which could compromise your online security. Most routers come with well-known passwords that should be changed to protect the device. Again we recommend you change the password to your router to a strong one such as a sentence from your favorite book plus some numbers and a special character e.g. TheHillsAreAliveWithTheSoundOfMusic76! (do not use this example of course)
Periodically router vendors release software updates for their products. These updates can contain important security fixes which protect your device against known attacks. Since most routers do not notify the user when an update is available, it is recommended that users periodically check in with the vendor to see if they have released updates. So make a note in your diary to check for updates at least once a month. (see details for your router)
