London (UK): Information security consultancy MWR InfoSecurity has outlined details of the challenges it has created for attendees at next week’s Security B-Sides London. The event, aimed at those in the information security sector, will take place on Wednesday 3 June at London’s ILEC Conference Centre.
This year’s pre-event challenge, deviously created by MWR, is a game of wits cryptically titled “D as in Dump.” It involves malware analysis with the prize of a Microsoft Band. The lucky winner will be announced during the show.
During the event, MWR InfoSecurity has also devised a further challenge for attendees to tackle that will involve solving a series of web applications to gain control of a SCADA based rocket-launcher scenario - and ultimately obtaining the code to unlock the beer fridge!
In addition, and as part of education Track 1, MWR’s consultants – James Loureiro and David Middlehurst will be exclusively presenting their research on assessing Adobe Reader in a session titled “Why Bother Assessing Popular Software?” at 11am. During the presentation the duo will share details of a case study that includes how they approached assessing Adobe Reader, how they made progress and why it is worth investing the time and effort on targets such as this. The discussion will cover fuzzing, the sandbox and delve into the Javascript API.
“This is a year of change for Security BSides London with a new date and a new venue, yet the interest every year just keeps growing. This fourth year will be a record breaker in terms of attendance with up to 800 participants. This growth would not be possible without the continued support from our sponsors and especially MWR InfoSecurity who not only provide sponsorship but organise challenges and the after party” said Thomas Fischer, BSides London
MWR’s technical director - Martyn Ruks, added, “Events, such as B-Sides London, are invaluable to our security community, providing a platform for discussion on the latest research in the InfoSec arena while also offering the opportunity for practical experience – such as our challenge. We’re really looking forward to seeing how long it will take for someone to crack the code on our beer fridge. Not forgetting the fact that we will be debuting new MWR t-shirt!”
