- A DDoS attack against the website Mumsnet has allowed hackers access to the website and it has been reported that:
- Posts on the site have been re-edited without their authors’ permission
- Messages are appearing on the site's forums that were not written by the owners of the accounts that they were posted under
- Users are being redirected to external sites
By Wieland Alge, VP and GM, EMEA at Barracuda Networks says: “Sites such as Mumsnet may not seem like a typical target for a cyber attack, but this just goes to show that any type of business is vulnerable to an attack. Therefore, all businesses should have the relevant tools in place to prevent being taken out a cyber attack. The key to protecting against a DDoS attack is the ability to distinguish between real and malicious requests. But this is not easily done. One effective screening method is integrated IP reputation intelligence that contains real-time insight and historical intelligence. However, this only works if the reputation criteria is updated frequently enough to combat against new and emerging threats. Organisations should regularly be looking at how to reinforce defences to avoid becoming the next victim.”
